Age 92, of O'Hara Twp., passed away on Friday, July 19, 2013. Wife of the late Frederick Lewis, Jr.; mother of Diane (James) Wright of Aspinwall, Melissa (E. Douglas) Stephan of Lexington, KY and the late Eric Lewis; grandmother of Erinn Carusetta, Peter (Erin) Stephan, Sarah Stephan, Jamie Wright and Hunter Stephan; great-grandmother of Nastassja Carusetta and Francesca Carusetta; sister of Hugh Goodrich. Mrs. Lewis, a graduate of the Neighborhood Playhouse, New York, New York, was a long time supporter of many artistic and philanthropic charities including: The Twenty-Five Club, Civic Light Opera, Operalogue, and The Pittsburgh Playhouse. No Visitation, Service and Interment were private. Funeral arrangements by WEDDELL-AJAK FUNERAL HOME, Aspinwall. HAMMERSCHMIDT JOHN ALVIN
Age 75, of Fox Chapel and Tucson, AZ, passed away on Tuesday, September 10, 2013. He was the son of the late Alvin and Verna Meyer Hammerschmidt of Elmhurst, IL. He was predeceased by his son, Kirk Edward Hammerschmidt; brother, Richard Hammerschmidt; and sister, Carol H. Alcorn. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, D.J. Slocum Hammerschmidt; a son, Stuart Gard Hammerschmidt, of Cranberry Township; two daughters, Amy Hammerschmidt Oliver of Aspinwall and Alison Hammerschmidt Cockerill of Winchester, IN; seven grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Tyler Hammerschmidt, Matthew and Emma Oliver, and Jacob, Emily and Julie Cockerill; and a niece, Elizabeth Alcorn of Branford, CT. John graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in business and earned his law degree from Stanford University. He was a member of the Bar Association in the states of California and Pennsylvania. Following graduation from Stanford, he joined the law firm of Morgan, Beauzay and Holmes in San Jose and Palo Alto, where he worked for three years. In 1967, John accepted a job with U.S. Steel Corporation and moved to Pittsburgh. There he worked for 32 years, most recently serving as Assistant General Counsel and Assistant Corporate Secretary. He also served as an Elder of Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church and on the board at Longue Vue Club and the Fox Chapel District Association. John enjoyed golf, duplicate bridge, gardening, fishing, cooking and most especially, his grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held September 13 at 11 a.m. at the Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church, 384 Fox Chapel Rd., where the family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Summer's Best Two Weeks, 111 Lake Gloria Road, Boswell, PA 15531, Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church or Forbes Hospice. Dr. Leonard A. Stept, of Shadyside, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 6, 2016, at age 80. Dr. Stept is survived by his wife, Kathy, and numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. William Stept, and his uncle and mentor, Dr. Raymond Stept.
Leonard was born to the late Reva and Abe Stept in Johnstown. He attended Westmont High School, W&J College, and served as a Captain in the Air Force. Dr. Stept received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh and completed his residencies and fellowship training in surgery and urology at Allegheny General Hospital, Western Pennsylvania Hospital and New York University Upstate in Syracuse, N.Y. A consummate health care professional, Lenny made a name for himself by practicing as an expert in general urology. He was an assistant professor of urology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. His hospital affiliations were through UPMC Hospitals, comprising St. Margaret, St. Clair, Magee-Women's Hospital and Shadyside.
Throughout his career, Dr. Stept contributed his expertise and knowledge to many health organizations in Pittsburgh and internationally, including recent travel to Zambia, Africa to treat patients and educate medical professionals. After his volunteer work in Africa, Lenny stated, "This was a life changing experience that I could not have gotten in any other venue." He was active in many local charities and nonprofits including serving on the boards at the Pittsburgh Zoo and Catholic Charities. Lenny was also actively involved with the Carnegie Museum of Natural History and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the arts and enjoyed traveling, accompanying the Symphony with his wife, Kathy, throughout Europe. Lenny loved Pittsburgh, and in particular Shadyside Village, where he was well known and adored by neighbors and business owners. Working to serve others up to the last day, Lenny died "with his boots on" having just retired from his medical practice hours before he was called. He had performed a literal lifetime of dutiful service with more than 53 years in the medical profession caring for the health of others. Lenny was loved by all who knew him and will be missed by his many friends, relatives and patients. His memory will forever live in the hearts and minds of those he touched.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at RALPH SCHUGAR CHAPEL INC., 5509 Centre Ave., Shadyside. Visitation one hour prior to services from noon to 1 p.m. Interment will be private. Donations can be made to Rodef Shalom, Catholic Charities and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
